The Key of Gold by Josef Baudis (1922)  https://sites.google.com/view/mythfolkloreanthology/fairy-tales

  • excerpt, similar to the Beauty and the Beast story but the beast is a Basilisk.
  • a mother and 3 daughters, market in the next town. mom asked what they would like. 2 of the 3 listed off numerus items  that the mom HAD to get them.
  •  the last daughter didn't want anything but asked if the mom would like to, to bring her 3 roses.
  • mom got lost on the way home and stumbled upon a rose garden. prettier than any picture that could have been painted. mom had forgotten the roses until then.
  • when the mom was taking the roses the Basilisk came and demanded her daughter for the roses.
  • mom was terrified, the beast threaten to tear her to shreds
  • mom told the daughter of her fate
  • daughter (Mary) didn't mind one bit
  • the Basilisk told Mary that she had to nurse him for 3 hours everyday (is she just a kid though?)
  • on the 3rd day the Basilisk asked Mary to cut off his head with a sword.
  • he threatened again to tear her to shreds if she did not cut off his head.
  • she had to cut off his head twice
  • the serpent that came out of the head held golden keys to the palace in his mouth
  • the basilisk turned into a beautiful youth and said "this castle belongs to me, and, as you have delivered me, there is no help for it; I must marry you."
  • happy ending with a wedding, full castle, dancing, music, and laughter.
Thoughts...

Could have used more of a description of the basilisk in the story. I am sure it did not because of keeping the story short, but I would have liked more of a description of the beast to truly visualize the character. Also more of a description of Mary as well, there is none. A good quick google search brings up different images of a basilisk.

This was the first one that pulled up. From a Wikipedia article on the Basilisk. Article says that the Basilisk is normally pictured without wings. When I think of a Basilisk I think of the one from the Harry Potter series;

This visions are completely different (to me at least) from each other. I would not have envisioned a Basilisk with a chicken head on it with a snake tail.
